The Chief Engineer will coordinates radio station(s) activities relating to acquisition, installation, maintenance, or modification of studio broadcasting equipment and transmitter site infrastructure in accordance with FCC compliance.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Evaluates studio needs for broadcasting equipment and makes recommendations for improvements in technical performance of station equipment.
Establishes procedures for operation and maintenance of studio, remote control, and all transmission equipment.
Directs and performs testing and maintenance of studio, remote, and broadcasting equipment to ensure operational performance meets industry standards and rules and regulations of Federal Communications Commission.
Develops modification plans for existing broadcasting equipment to improve technical performance and overall quality air sound of stations.
Directs modification and testing of equipment t ensure operational performance meets specified standards.
Prepares repair and maintenance schedules for studio, remote, and transmitter site broadcasting equipment to improve the reliability of broadcasts.
Provides computer hardware/network support.
Recommends annual budget for station(s) engineering department and controls expenditures within budget limitations.
Directly supervises employees in the Engineering Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Other duties may be assigned. Inspects, repairs, and maintains all broadcasting and radio station equipment including transmitters, satellite uplinks/downlinks, computers, antennas, studio equipment, remote equipment, generators, telephones, and related equipment
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Ability to interpret and extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Complies with Network and Urban One’s mandatory on-time and adheres to related course deadlines
Excellent mix of computer knowledge both digital and analog electronics. Knowledge of UHF and VHF transmitters and receivers, antennas and other broadcast equipment.
Ability to multi-task and work long hours.
Ability to respond in a timely “on-call” capacity.
The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and sit.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus, and appropriate vision needed to drive as required with a valid driver’s license.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to risk of electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; and risk of non-ionizing radiation.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. FCC General class license or SBE Senior certification, valid driver’s license and state-mandated auto insurance.
