Hamilton Island is seeking an experienced Vet Nurse / Animal Keeper for the Wildlife Park! Work closely with the Senior Keeper to deliver the highest quality of animal husbandry, care and welfare. Maintain and develop exhibits to an exceptional standard and engage with the guests to deliver high levels of customer service and educate them about native Australian Fauna and Flora.

Your Role

  • Assist the Director and Senior Keeper and Animal care team to provide care and treatment of any animals that present unwell.
  • Assist the Director and Senior keeper by monitoring our preventative medicine protocol in conjunction with our consulting veterinary support teams e.g. knowledgeable in faecal float.
  • Report any animal welfare or illness concerns to the appropriate personnel.
  • Coach and assist fellow members of the team on animal care and procedures as per the industry standard
  • Provide team support and assist to follow standard operating procedures reflective of the highest industry animal welfare standards
  • Work closely with the Senior Keeper and other Keeping Staff to ensure accountability for Daily Reporting for compliance purposes.
  • Ensure the safety of animals, guests and staff at all times by following HIE policy and procedures
  • Stay up to date with husbandry and training information regarding the animals held in the Wildlife Park collection
  • Ensure sufficient feed supplies for animals, as per SOP
  • Undertake the collection of koala leaf and macropod browse when required and/or if requested by senior keeper 
  • Work with senior management to continually develop new and innovative public activities that promote education and conservation 
  • Assist Wildlife Park keepers in performing husbandry rounds, talks, deliver animal experiences and assist in the Café and Retail outlet if required.

 

About You

  • QLD Driver’s License 
  • Must possess tertiary qualifications in Vet Nursing (Essential)
  • 1-2 years’ full time paid experience in a vet nursing role with native Wildlife (Essential)
  • Confident in administering IV drugs and catheterising wildlife Koalas in particular (Essential)
  • Demonstrated ability to perform faecal floats for the diagnosis of internal parasites.
  • Relevant experience or qualifications in captive animal management with a strong background in Koalas is (Highly desirable)
  • Exceptional interpersonal and team building skills (Essential)
  • Must demonstrate a passion for promoting awareness of native Australian fauna and flora (Essential)
  • Current First Aid (Essential)
  • Exceptional interpersonal and team building skills

  • Must hold or be able to obtain First Aid
