Distribution Advanced Studies - Department 178 Project Engineer / Area Lead
The Power Delivery Distribution Engineering Services Business Unit (BU) is currently accepting internal applications for an Area Lead (AL) for the Distribution Advanced Studies group, Department 178. The AL is requested to support the departments west coast presence and will be responsible for both in office and remote employees in the Pacific, Mountain, and Central time zones as required. The AL does not need be located in one of the departments office locations. However, preference is given to those that are on the west coast and/or can provide a solid plan on how they can effectively manage remote teams in the western time zone. This individual will report to the Department Manager (DM) and will assist in managing a department of engineers, project leads, and administrative staff in addition to acting as the responsible project engineer for projects. Travel will be required.
Responsibilities
The AL shares responsibility with the DM for managing the day-to-day activities of the department to produce results consistent with POWER’s mission statement and our culture. The AL is expected to achieve the goals of the department business plan, maintain POWER’s high-quality standards, promote internal teamwork and meet the needs of our clients. This position is also responsible for developing, maintaining and strengthening client relationships within the central and eastern regions.
- Perform and direct others in the proposal and execution of projects in Distribution Studies main discipline areas (Planning, Protection, and Distribution Automation) as well as other advanced technology areas (Advanced Distribution Management Systems, Microgrids, Distributed Energy Resources, etc).
- Act as a multidiscipline lead to further expand distribution protection, grid modernization, planning, and advanced studies project(s) reach and capabilities
- Ensure POWER quality procedures are followed and that the team is resourced in an optimal manner
- Communicate with DM on a routine basis
- Work with the Technical Manager(s) to support the technical growth and industry involvement of the department.
- Manage all financial and technical aspects of performance for this Distribution team, including, but not limited to:
- Timecard Approvals
- Monthly financial reporting
- Weekly and monthly resource planning
- Annual business plans
- Appraisals
- Salary/Promotion/Bonus recommendations
- Department participation in KMP
- Proposals
- Lunch and Learns
- Mentorship
- Regular touch base with employees
- Client business development visits
- Outreach and relationship building with Project Managers (PM) and local DMs from other BUs
- Leadership by example through regularly working with the Distribution team on active projects
Required Education/Experience
- Proven experience leading others on a project team or in a department
- Experience filling the role of a project engineer or project lead
- Able to work in a fast paced environment, tracking and organizing many tasks of varying importance and size
- The candidate must have strong command of the English language with good written and oral communication skills in order to communicate effectively with internal team members and external client personnel
- Ability to use communication technology to seamlessly work with remote staff and supervision. Transparency will be key to success in this position.
- Proven ability and desire to mentor and help others
- Two (2) or more years of experience in the Power Delivery Division or significant applicable experience
Desired Education/Experience
- BSEE or BSEET degree (or equivalent), from an accredited university preferably with a power option
- Five (5) or more years of experience in the Power Delivery Division or significant applicable experience
- Two (2) or more years of experience in distribution system analysis
- Professional Engineering Registration (PE) or the ability to obtain in in the first year of the position
- Experience with and established positive relationships with POWER clients
- Completion of POWER’s DM training modules
- Administrative leadership experience
Term of Assignment
Both temporary and permanent assignments will be considered. For a temporary transfer, the assignment could be as little as three (3) years, provided a viable successor has been identified and trained.
