Work required by this position is technical construction supervision, supervising maintenance and other labor or skilled tasks which include prioritizing and scheduling work, managing manpower, ordering material and inventory control. Computer work, including daily performance reports, is required.
The employees currently in these positions perform a variety of field work. The work is heavy labor, and mostly outdoor work in all types of weather elements. The field work includes but is not limited to ditch cleaning, litter pickup, sidewalk grinding, sidewalk installation, stormwater pipe repair and installation, bridge repair, asphalt work, flagging traffic, guardrail repairs, removing dead animals, miscellaneous concrete work, emergency response crew work; inspecting pipes, structures and ditches, mowing, weed eating, landscaping, etc.
This crew will be mostly dedicated to Guardrail installation and repair.
What Would You Do?
- Application and use of various concrete repair techniques (expansion joints, spalls, cracks, etc).
- Application and use of cement, epoxy, asphalt and latex based materials and various sealants.
What Do You Need To Have?
- 2 years of public works, utilities, general construction, maintenance, construction or repair work that includes lead worker, supervision or supervisory training; or
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
- Possession and maintenance of a valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License Class B.
- Physically capable of climbing, lifting, and swimming.
- Abilities to work over, around, and near water at heights greater than 6 feet.
- Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.
Highly Desirable
- Florida Commercial Driver’s License “A” Preferred.
- Maintenance of traffic certifications (FDOT intermediate maintenance of traffic certification).
- Understand and able to implement County policies and procedures and embrace the department's foundational values.

- Can effectively verbally communicate with the team and give direction and instruction to other team members.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge and ability to complete hot-ix asphalt patches and overlays.
- Knowledge and ability to perform stormwater conveyance maintenance activities (pipe inspection and cleaning, ditch or pond maintenance).
- Knowledge of metal handrail and guardrail systems.
- Knowledge of roadway construction systems, activities, specifications, and requirements/rules (roadway base materials, asphalt, concrete, underground utilities, underdrain, storm water pipe repair/replacement, storm water drainage structures repair/replacement, roadway grading, and shoulder maintenance activities).
- Knowledge and ability to form, pour, and finish concrete sidewalks and curb.
- Knowledge of types and uses of public works equipment related to street, highway and utility construction and maintenance and the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of construction equipment.
- Knowledge and use of proper safety procedures related to work and handling of materials.
- Knowledge of service scheduling, time, material and manpower requirements to complete a variety of utility maintenance type work projects. Knowledge of basic safety and health policies and procedures.
- Ability to use hand power equipment (concrete saws, drills, needle guns, etc.).
- Ability to meet and deal with the public in a courteous, confidant and tactful manner when coordinating work and in responding to inquiries.
- Ability to maintain accurate records of scheduled work projects and the status of a variety of construction, services, and maintenance projects.
- Ability to plan, schedule and supervise personnel and equipment.
- Ability to read working diagrams, sketches and blueprints; keep records and prepare reports.
- Ability to accurately evaluate the work, abilities and attitudes of subordinates and possession of sufficient physical strength and agility to work outdoors under adverse weather conditions.
