This is moderately complex non-journey level work requiring general skills in construction, maintenance and repair of Public Work's bridges, drainage, and roadway facilities.  An employee in this class performs work that frequently involves performing assignments in a recognized skill or multiple skills.  Employees are expected to perform semi-independently and independently on assigned work and be able to provide guidance and training to others when completing work.

This Craftworker 1 position is located at:  22211 U.S. Highway 19 North, Clearwater, FL 33765.  Work Schedule:  Monday – Thursday (10-hour days).

What Will You Do

  • Must be able to perform all construction tasks relating to miscellaneous concrete and asphalt construction and repairs, pipe repair and installation, stormwater structure installation and repair, guardrail repair roadway grading and shoulder maintenance, sidewalk installation and repair and routine bridge maintenance.
  • Supervises the crew in the absence of the Crew Chief.
  • Operates small equipment including but not limited to concrete saw, jackhammer, drills and other powered hand tools.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as tractor, skid steer etc.
  • Sets up and operates survey instruments such as a level.
  • Employee should be self-motivated and safety conscious.

What Do You Need

Experience – Skilled craft or trade experience in concrete and asphalt construction repairs; pipe repair and installation; stormwater structure installation and repair; guardrail repair, roadway grading and shoulder maintenance; routine bridge maintenance.

  • 3 years of skilled craft or trade experience as described above; or
  • Completion of a 1-year skilled trades vocational or technical school program with a diploma or certification and at least 2 years of experience as described above; or
  • Completion of a 2-year skilled trades vocational or technical school program with a diploma or certification and at least 1 year of experience as described above.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida Driver’s Commercial Driver’s License "B" upon hire with eligibility based upon evaluation of a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) driving report.
  • Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.
  • Must be physically able to climb, stand for long periods of time, crawl inside storm pipes, lift and swim.
  • Must be able to work over, around, and near water at heights greater than 6 feet.
  • Able to work in high traffic areas.

Highly Desirable

  • Florida Commercial Driver’s License A preferred.
  • MOT certification preferred.
  • Knowledge of maintenance of traffic operations and roadway hazard mitigation for flagging traffic.

  • Ability to understand and implement county policies and procedures and embrace the department's foundational values.
  • Ability to verbally communicate with the team and supervisors.
  • Ability to take both written and verbal communication and direction and successfully complete an assigned task.
