Overview
ERT is in search of an Geospatial Systems Architect to play a crucial role in designing and implementing the architecture for enterprise-level systems. You will help define system and application architecture, providing a strategic vision and problem-solving abilities to ensure the organization’s goals are met efficiently.  The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of data, processing workflows, development, databases, and system administration, all on a variety of tools and platforms to manage large-scale data and operational environments. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with existing IT and project teams to:
    • Understand and document the existing geospatial data, metadata, workflows, and code.
    • Understand and document the requirements for data management and security.
    • Understand and document the existing IT infrastructure.
  • Establish short-term recommendations for improved data throughput and integrity, and work with the team to implement these changes.
  • Develop, define and document system and application architecture that optimizes the system for better data throughput, cost, operational insight, development environments, system support, and system administration.  Propose a strategy to move from existing systems to optimized systems and workflows, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.  These recommendations shall include:
    • IT infrastructure to support data processing system.
    • GIS environment and business intelligence dashboards for staff scientists to review data.
    • Development environment for project team to support and maintain the workflow through building, testing, and deploying solutions, including continuous integration and continuous delivery workflows.
    • Processing and storage environments for data to be processed and displayed using geospatial web services.

Required Skills
A minimum of 4 years' relevant technical architecture experience to include:

  • Code development, to include but not exclusive to python and SQL, including best practices for doing code development
  • Data management
  • Transactional database configuration and administration, preferably with Postgres
  • Analytic databases, such as DuckDB
  • Hypervisors, preferably Microsoft HyperV
  • Containerized systems, preferably using Podman
  • Container orchestration
  • Experience with Local and Hybrid, and hosted Cloud
  • Experience with Windows, Windows Server, and Linux (Redhat preferable)
  • System Administration, Cybersecurity and cybersecurity principles
  • Geospatial data, geospatial processing, and geospatial web services
  • Open-Source Software and systems
  • Continuous integration and continuous delivery
  • Networking protocols and architectures
  • Business intelligence software
  • Development of IT infrastructure and transition plans, including presentation of data and workflows through infographics and other visual tools
  • Ability to work under general supervision and rely on limited experience and judgment to accomplish goals

Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident who has lived in the United States at least 3 out of the last 5 years and be able to pass a background investigation to obtain a security badge to access applicable government facilities and systems.

Education
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field. 

Location
This position is eligible for onsite work in Silver Spring, MD, a hybrid schedule, or fully remote.

Salary
The salary range for this role is $110,000 - 293,000/year. This range is a good faith estimate based on similar roles across the organization. ERT uses several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the position's scope and expected duties, a candidate’s work experience, education/training, and key skills.
