Position Description
ERT is seeking a Senior Scientist to support the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center to provide high-level scientific and technical expertise. The selected candidate will play a pivotal role in advancing research, analysis, and data management initiatives that align with the center's mission of observing Earth’s natural and human-induced changes through satellite data. This role requires strong scientific acumen, technical proficiency, and experience in Earth observation science.
Responsibilities
- Scientific Leadership:
- Develop, lead, and execute innovative scientific research projects related to remote sensing, satellite data analysis, geospatial sciences, and environmental monitoring.
- Collaborate with other scientists to design and apply novel methodologies to address Earth observation challenges (e.g., land use change, climate impacts, and ecosystem monitoring).
- Data and Analytical Services:
- Utilize advanced geospatial tools and techniques for processing, analyzing, and interpreting large datasets from satellites (e.g., Landsat, MODIS, Sentinel).
- Work with cloud-based platforms and computing services to optimize data storage, processing, and access for large-scale datasets.
- Collaboration and Technical Support:
- Support cross-disciplinary teams in technical problem-solving and research initiatives.
- Provide scientific and technical input on data product validation, software tools, and data pipelines for effective integration across projects.
- Project and Contract Management:
- Assist in planning and managing key projects related to USGS missions and ensure alignment with EROS priorities.
- Track and report on project milestones, deliverables, and budgetary requirements to stakeholders.
- Coordinate with contractors and federal agencies to ensure smooth technical operations and project implementation.
- Communication and Knowledge Sharing:
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences and scientific meetings.
- Prepare detailed reports, scientific documentation, and presentations for stakeholders, including government agencies and the public.
Required Skills
- 8+ years of experience in Earth observation, remote sensing, GIS, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated experience with USGS EROS data products, satellite data analysis (e.g., Landsat, MODIS), and environmental monitoring.
- Strong background in scientific programming (Python, R, or equivalent) and cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Earth Engine).
- Expertise in geospatial data analysis, remote sensing tools, and data visualization.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities to solve complex environmental and geospatial challenges.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work in multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience with project management tools and methodologies.
Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident (green card) and be able to pass a background investigation to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
Desired
- Knowledge of environmental regulations, land management practices, or climate science.
- Familiarity with machine learning models and artificial intelligence applications in geospatial sciences.
- Experience working with federal agencies or large research organizations.
Education
Ph.D. (preferred) or Master’s degree in Geospatial Science, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science, Remote Sensing, or related field.
Location
Work may be performed in Sioux Falls, SD or remotely from Greenbelt, MD. The position is eligible for a remote, onsite, or hybrid work schedule.
Salary
The salary range for this role is $46,000 - $221,000/year. This range is a good faith estimate based on similar roles across the organization. ERT uses several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the position's scope and expected duties, a candidate’s work experience, education/training, and key skills.
