Position Description
Will support tasks at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center (CPC). Will develop and maintain forecast tools generating probabilistic forecasts to aid in production of CPC sub seasonal and seasonal outlooks. The tasks include but are not limited to: 

  • Development, and maintain the consolidated seasonal forecast for use in CPC productions. 
  • Development of seasonal products, building on existing consolidated forecast to include seasonal snowfall and monthly forecasts for temperature and precipitation.
  • Design and develop a second-generation forecast consolidation to make use of machine learning and improve output usability by switching from tercile forecasts to a full probability of exceedance forecast distribution.

Required Skills
Must have experience in handling a large amount of data from GCMs and insightful knowledge of statistics. Must have a good understanding of tropical storm dynamics, atmospheric and ocean prediction model components and their workings in the UNIX/Linux environments. Must be proficient in Python, Fortran programing languages, UNIX scripting language, and scientific and graphics software (e.g. METLAB, GrADS and NCL). Knowledge of the Madden-Julian Oscillation and the El Nino-Southern Oscillation is helpful, as well as AI/Machine Learning.

Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident and be able to pass a background investigation to obtain a security badge to enter the applicable government facility.

Education
MS in atmospheric sciences, related discipline, or equivalent. PhD preferred.
