ERT is seeking an environmental scientist to support tasks at the Climate Prediction Center (CPC), part of the National Weather Service (NWS), National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), to develop post-processing and statistical algorithms, including AI, for enhancing U.S. CPC International Desk products. The environmental scientist will join a team of scientists who support weather forecasting, climate monitoring and prediction, and impacts of extreme climate on socio-economic sectors such as food security and water resource management around the world to help global stakeholders and core partners protect the health, safety, and economic needs of people whom they serve.

Position Description
Duties of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Calibrating and postprocessing model forecasts and developing flood and drought impact-based forecasts on crop production and water resources
  • Evaluation of weather and subseasonal-to-seasonal forecast models and documentation of results
  • Developing AI/ML algorithms applied to observational and model data to improve forecasts
  • Running processes on on-premise computers and in a cloud computing environment

Required Skills

  • Experience and strong programming capability in Python
  • Experience with statistical computational tools such as MATLAB
  • Experience shell scripting in Unix/Linux, including automating processes
  • Experience in a cloud computing environment
  • Experience applying artificial intelligence/machine learning algorithms to meteorological or oceanographic or environmental data
  • Experience in the use of remote sensing data, hydrological, and crop data
  • Knowledge of meteorological data formats, such as GRIB2
  • Knowledge of meteorological model outputs such as GFS, GEFS, CFS, and the NMME
  • Knowledge of weather, hydrological, and climate processes

The candidate must be a U.S. Citizen, or Permanent Resident holding a working status, and be able to pass a NACI clearance.


  • Fortran programming experience
  • Interest in weather/climate and forecast operations 
  • GIS experience
  • Familiarity with model verification tools

Master’s degree in atmospheric science or related science

The position is eligible for up to 80% telework. Candidates must be able to work on site as needed at the National Center for Weather and Climate Prediction in College Park, MD, where they will work closely with scientists at CPC.
