National Gypsum Services Company has an immediate opening for a New Product Development Associate at our Charlotte, NC location. This position will report to the Manager, New Product Development.

Job Summary:

The New Product Development Associate position is key to National Gypsum’s innovation efforts for the development of new products and ideas. The incumbent will perform laboratory and plant work in support of new innovative developments or technical programs. The position also requires working closely with manufacturing plants as well as outside contacts to ensure successful completion of projects.


Major Job Responsibilities (not all inclusive):

  • Participate in planning and design of product development projects, trialing, testing, and validation
  • Work with suppliers to understand material attributes for leveraging and developing new properties within wallboard panels
  • Organize and implement paper plant or gypsum wallboard plant trials to confirm laboratory findings and qualify development programs
  • Routinely prepare lab sample boards and test properties to validate new product theories
  • Meticulously record and organize data into logically written reports
  • Learn and conduct wallboard industry physical properties testing and lab equipment
  • Quick to perform physical tasks or experiments in a lab or plant setting
  • Basic understanding of products/processes and relevant materials is essential
  • Assist in planning and implementing of all project phases related to technical problem solving and development work within an established time frame
  • Ability or willingness to operate equipment such as saws, drills, sanders, and folk lifts
  • Willingness to travel approximately 25% of the time. This would include both air and automobile travel
  • Read, analyze and interpret test standards and documents
  • Diplomatically work in a team and show cooperation with internal and external collaborators



  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Engineering or Applied Sciences
  • Incumbent should have 3 to 5 years of experience in either laboratory and/or manufacturing plants
  • Construction experience is a plus
  • Must be knowledgeable in computer skills (i.e. Minitab, Excel, Word, Power Point, etc.)
  • Hands-on and a can-do attitude are essential personality traits
  • Strong commitment to safety and the ability to maintain an orderly and safe workplace
  • Willingness to work in a sometimes dusty and dirty environment
  • Maintain a high level of efficiency in completing tasks
  • Demonstrate proficiency in verbal and written communication, with an understanding of planning and work organization
  • Must be able to stand 6-8 hours per day; required to lift 50 lbs.
