Working Title:  Environmental Specialist (Monitoring and Outreach)

Location: 22211 U.S, Highway 19 North, Clearwater, FL 33765

 

If you are passionate about protecting water resources in Pinellas County and enjoy a variety of work projects, this may be the perfect opportunity for you to join a stellar group of Environmental Professionals as an Environmental Specialist with Pinellas County’s Division of Environmental Management.

This is a technical field and office position within the Department of Public Works, Division of Environmental Management. Duties include:  conducting environmental monitoring of the County’s streams, lakes, and coastal waters (including participating in surface water quality, benthic, and seagrass monitoring programs); participating in education and outreach initiatives; working with volunteers; creating social media posts.

Position Specific Requirements

Experience – professional experience in environmental management.

Education - major course work in environmental, physical, natural or biological science, engineering or related field.

  • At least 5 years of experience as described above; or
  • Associate degree as described above at least 3 years of experience as described above; or
  • Bachelor’s degree as described above and at least 1 year of experience as described above; or
  • Master’s degree as described above and some experience as described above.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to swim.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida Driver's License upon hire with eligibility based upon evaluation of a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) driving report.
  • Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.

Highly Desirable

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field.
  • Experience with water quality sampling and equipment, and lab practices.
  • Volunteer coordination and/or environmental outreach experience.
  • Ability to snorkel, scuba, and trailer and operate small watercraft.
  • Working knowledge of ESRI Geographical Information Systems (GIS).

Illustrative Tasks

  • Conduct surface water quality, benthic, and seagrass monitoring including the operation of specialized monitoring equipment.
  • Collect and maintain technical environmental data, interpret the results of laboratory data, evaluate ecological and environmental impacts, and assist in development of reports on specialized studies.
  •  Conduct environmental outreach programs, including development of materials and delivery of public presentations.  Support the Adopt A Pond program as needed.
  • Assist with coordinating the activities of volunteer personnel or interns within the Division.
  • Perform related work as assigned or required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of scientific research techniques and preparation of environmental reports.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental laws, rules, and regulations as related to surface waters.
  • Knowledge of mathematics and natural, physical, and biological sciences.
  • Ability to formulate and present ideas and findings clearly and concisely in written, oral, and graphic form.
  • Ability to enter and query data within databases and perform basic analysis.
  • Ability to handle difficult situations and public interactions with tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Ability to swim, snorkel, scuba, and trailer and operate small watercraft.
